The strain upraise of joy and praise (The strain upraise of joy and praise)

First published in Church Hymns with Tunes; ed. by Arthur Sullivan (S.P.C.K., 1874). This copy from the 1901 reprint.

Although usually listed among Sullivan’s hymn tunes Ian Bradley, in his book Lost Chords and Christian Soldiers (Oxford University Press, 2013), considers it more appropriate to list this work as an anthem due to the lengthy passages of plainchant that are more suited to choirs rather than congregational singing.
